History

The MSSC was created in 2004 when the Marine Society merged with the Sea Cadet Association, forming the country’s largest maritime charity.

Founded In 1756 the Marine Society shares a similar heritage with the Sea Cadets (est 1856). Both sought to support destitute children. The Marine Society would give them a suit of clothes and train them to work on board the King’s ships or an apprenticeship and the Sea Cadets was established by old sailors wanting to give young people a helping hand via training on a naval theme, many of whom had been orphaned as a result of the Crimean war in the 1850’s.

Today the Marine Society works to ensure that seafarers of all the sea services can access a range of educational opportunities via distance learning and seeks to enhance the seafarers unique lifestyle with a ships Libraries Service.

The remit of the Sea Cadets is to provide fun, friendship, adventure and learning new skills based on waterborne and land based activities for 10 to 18 year olds. The Sea Cadets offers a wide range of largely free activities and enables cadets to earn valuable and useful qualifications (including the Duke of Edinburgh award and BTEC).

The MSSC is committed to provide personal development opportunities and support in a maritime context for young people and professional seafarers from all the sea services.
